Holy Dominion of Egiolin

The People of Egiolin

Skin tones among the High Elves range from fair-skinned to bone white, while High Elves who work the fields may develop a tan it’s considered “unbecoming” in the higher-ranking castes. Natural hair colors cover a range of light brown, red, blonde and white. It’s considered fashionable in some circles to dye their hair colors that wouldn’t normally occur among High Elves so colors such as black, blue, and green may be found among those Elves with disposable income to spend on such luxuries. Most of the High Elves have blue, green, or hazel eyes, but violet and red are not unheard of. Depending on caste and income some residents of the Holy Dominion take part in tattooing and carefully sculpted scarification, usually of delicate intertwining patterns following the spine, forearms and sometimes cheeks.

Bastard Names

Children born out of wedlock (as well as the majority of Half-Elves born of High Elven parents) take the name Telpë, the Old Elven word for “Silver.”

Customs and Superstitions

The Caste System

The citizens of the Holy Dominion follow a five-tiered caste system. Effects of this system vary by region, typicaly the closer to the city of Kulidair the more weight and importance is placed on caste. In the city itself members of some castes are restricted to certain areas.

The five castes are…

  • Serke – Those with a clear and direct bloodline tracing back to the Mage-Queen Egiolin.
  • Arnórë – The noble families of the Holy Dominion.
  • Nólë – Those who practice an intellectual profession.
  • Serni – Those who practice a trade.
  • Kel – Unskilled laborers and the servant class.

In some places there may be some limited ability to earn (or buy) your offspring a step upwards in the caste system, but in general there is not a great deal of mobility between the castes. Being forced downward in the caste system is a commonly used punishment for criminals.

History

The high elves who founded the Holy Dominion of Egiolin are the oldest known race in the world and the first organized nation. The nation takes its name from the Mage-queen Egiolin who sacrificed herself to repel the Drow and end the thirty days of darkness from the age of legend.

Old version…

The society here (particularly in the area around the capital) is highly regimented and follows a caste system with limited mobility. There is a servant class that while treated fairly (by and large) with respect is looked down on by the nobility, many of which can trace their lineage back tens of thousands of years.

The opinions of outsiders is typically colored by those from the capital region who are usually considered somewhere on the spectrum of “what a stuck up douche” to “self-important rich entitled racist asshat”.
